Born in 1962 in a small Hakka village in the New Territories of Hong Kong, Lee Man Sang moved to the United Kingdom at the age of 14, where he worked in his family’s restaurant while pursuing art studies. In 1992, he returned to his birthplace and established a studio in a 300-year-old school building, focusing mainly on sculpture. His work incorporates wood and other natural materials to create formalist and functional art, including self-invented musical instruments.
In recent years, many of his sculptures have integrated concepts from traditional Chinese culture, such as phonetic symbols derived from Chinese characters.
Lee Man Sang is also an active performance artist and improvisational musician, having collaborated with artists across various media in Hong Kong.
Recently, he has retreated from the public eye to his ancestral village, where he collects old objects and materials to create handcrafted items and musical instruments.
